Making a Goal

Today I want to tell you about a very special project being supported by our local community as a way to remember Bronwyn.  Our project is called "Bronwyn's Wheelhouse," and the purpose is to help children with special needs and their families through home renovation.  To read the full story behind Bronwyn's Wheelhouse project, and to get updates on our current project, visit our website: www.bronwynswheelhouse.blogspot.com  Click on the tab "Bronwyn's Story" for the background information.

Our current project is a bathroom re-do for a little girl, LilyAnne.  LilyAnne is mobile with a walker, or with the aid of grab bars.  She's 11 years old, and would like to be more independent!  After we remodel LilyAnne's bathroom, she will be able to get in and out of the bathroom by herself (currently the doorway is too narrow to allow her walker in, and there are no grab bars), she'll be able to use the sink, toilet and shower independently, too!  And here's what's really exciting: we're $800.00 away from making this a reality for her!!

So here's what I'm going to do: From now until the money is raised, I'm going to donate 50% of the proceeds from my BCharmer shop to this cause.  If you've been waiting for a time to get a special accessory, now is a great time to shop!  Visit my shops online here or here.

You can also donate directly to the foundation.  Your donations are completely tax deductable, as our local chapter of the Kiwanis Club has kindly adopted our program, and thus has given us non-profit status.  To donate, you can make a check out to: "Tumwater Kiwanis Youth Foundation" and write "Bronwyn's Wheelhouse" in the subject line.  Mail the check to:
Tumwater Kiwanis Club
5201 Capitol Blvd SE
PMB 182
Tumwater WA 98501

I have added this little thermometer to the blog to track our progress on the fundraising; I'm so excited that we can make this happen!

P.S. Some of you have already given to this cause, Thank-You so much!!  Please don't feel that you need to give again; the point is that a small (and manageable) gift from many can make a significant impact.  That way, nobody feels pinched.

Okay, friends; let's make this happen!!

Day of Champions

Today I had so much fun with Bronwyn! Her school participated in an event called the "Day of Champions," which is a non-competitive track and field day for children with special needs. The energy was great! The school band came out and played, there were cheerleaders, and lots of older students who were volunteers for each station. Bronwyn's favorite event was a bean bag relay. I took her out of her wheelchair and we "ran" to a volunteer who had small bean bags. Bronwyn had to pick up a bean bag and run back to the starting line to drop the bag off. Then she turned around and repeated the process until all of the bags were at the starting line. She also did the long jump into a sand pit, the soccer kick, the discus throw, the shotput (with small foam balls), and she got to kick a huge striped ball around an obstacle course. I was participating with Bronwyn, so I wasn't able to get any pictures of her in action, but her teacher took some, so I hope to post them later on. For now, here are a couple to give you an idea of how much fun we had!

New Girls

I am excited to tell you that Brian and I are adding to our family! No, not in that way; we're not planning any more children, but we're planning for three CHICKENS! Brian is going to build a sweet little coop, and I've been researching breeds. I think we've settled on three breeds and I'm hoping to get one of each. They are: Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, and Austrolorp.

We've been talking about getting chickens for some time now, but the timing was never quite right. Now that Bronwyn is a little older and more stable, I feel ready to embark. I'll definitely keep you posted as we go through the process.

In other news, I'm reading a really great book right now: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. It is a memoir that was written after Jean-Dominique suffered a massive stroke that left him intellectually intact, but completely paralyzed physically. His only way of communicating was to blink his left eye. I'm half way through the book and it's really an inspiring read.
