Keeping it Fun

Before I say anything else, I must send out a big Happy Birthday to my dear Brother.  I love you!  Oh, and Happy Birthday also to Pete Seeger; I love you, too, but not as much as my Brother!

Bronwyn and I spent the weekend in Portland, Oregon because there was a Mother Daughter gala at Stonehenge Studios, the boutique that is now carrying BCharmer goodies.  We delivered wallets, zippies, scarves and headbands for the event.  I am tortured by the fact that I forgot to bring my camera on this trip (It was the first item on my list and I actually remembered to bring extra batteries, but No camera; unbelievable)!  So I will show you photos taken upon our return home.

While visiting the Studio, I met the most wonderful artist.  Her name is Billie and she's of advanced age (a Lady never tells).  No longer able to run her sewing machine well or to get out as much as she used to, she picked up her needle and thread and started creating the most beautiful aprons.  Of course I had to have one!  They are made with the most wonderful fabrics and they are full of hand stitched goodness.  Her work can be found at Stonehenge Studios, which is located on Corbett St in Portland.

Today I'm wearing my new apron while I'm cleaning and cooking and it has made these tasks so much more enjoyable!  This has me thinking that there really is something beneficial about ritualizing the banal.  Doing the dishes is not the first activity that springs to mind when I think "fun." But a simple act of intention, like donning an apron before the chore, makes that job feel more pure and purposeful somehow.  Somehow I feel connected to my foremothers/sisters and I realize how easy I've got it compared to them.  Thank-You, Billie, for sharing your talents and for helping me feel more in touch with the joys of the moment.

yeah it was mainly in the past that woman and or men used aprons when doing household chores. honestly just STILL makes sense but people dont do it... makes even more sense to use a heavy PVC or rubber apron for dish work or working around dirty plumbing like my dad, but does he do it... nope!

Oh, and it looks adorable on you! And a shout out to Billie for mine, too. I felt so elegant and pretty frying an egg this morning. Now all those June Cleaver shots of my grandmother watering the garden beds in pumps make sense.

That's so funny, Jenni! Gardening in pumps... I don't think I could hack it!

Aprons are so practical, but I think there's a stigma attached to wearing them. Those PVC aprons are great in the lab, too, but they weigh a ton!

So nice to see your beautiful face!!! Love the apron!
I wear them everyday else I have grease spots and who knows what else on my clothes ;)

I just had to repair one and another is ready to give way...

Do you know about Angry Chicken and her Tie One On extravaganza?

Thanks, Blayne! Unfortunately this apron is nicer than all of my clothes, but oh well!

I'll have to look up that angry chicken thing!

You look so beautiful Colleen!

And I love your apron - and I also use one, made of fabric of course. Actually I wear it while I cook, because I always spill something on myself :-))

Oh, Judit: Thank-You for your kindness! I dread spilling on this apron, but it *will* happen. That's what it's for, I guess, but it's so pretty!

very true about the heavy weight of a PVC or rubber apron. they also get quite hot. though with my autism and sensory integration disorder i used to steal them from the schools home economics class cooking days and come back the next day, id curl up under the heavy warm pvc or rubber and fall asleep lol!

Oh Bcharmer about that stigma around them, yeah it is definitely a big one and the internet has only made it worse. Not only do people not wear them since it seems that moreso maids wore them in early 80s but now they are fetish objects used in the "kinky" field.

thats just great!!! (et sarcasm)

this stigma needs to go!

Beautiful apron and beautiful you! I love wearing aprons, and have a small collection of vintage ones, plus a few I made. (But I agree, there is that stigma, alas, and so I generally only where them around the house. Sigh.)

And while I am thankful for a dishwasher, and have no desire to go back to my earlier days of hand washing everything, (there were days when the kids were little I felt chained to the kitchen sink) I do find that occasionally sticking my hands in a sink full of hot soapy water, and gazing out the window while washing a few dishes, to be extremely relaxing.

Oh BOY, I can't wait to have a dishwasher. I make the best of doing dishes by hand because I have no other options. But a dishwasher would be a lifesaver. Then I will only be chained to the washing machine!

What a lovely apron - all the more so for hearing the story behind it. And it looks great on too, what a lovely photo of you
